The Guvnor assesses Leopardstown Day 2
After Sizing Europe enhanced his Cheltenham credentials and Carlito Brigante signaled his on St Stephen’s Day, many more put such aspirations on the line during day two of the Christmas racing.

There is very little to go on in the opening 3-year-old hurdle at Leopardstown with many of the participants going over timber for the first time. However, Big Game Hunter is another acquisition by Gigginstown House Stud and yet another former John Oxx charge to go jumping. Though The Guvnor feels Secant Star could provide the answer and hears the French bred is highly regarded by connections.

Gordon Elliot’s Grey Soldier may make a winning debut in the second heat on the card while the first chase of the day has the makings of a real cracker. Forpadydeplasterer lost nothing in defeat to Sandown specialist Twist Magic in the Tingle Creek Chase, but the form of Tranquil Sea stands out even more. He easily saw off Poquelin in the Paddy Power chase at Cheltenham and that one of Paul Nicholls has gone on to win snugly since. A repeat of anything akin to the Paddy Power form should suffice for Eddie O’Grady’s charge.

Fionnegas – running for the same combination as Secant Star – puts his unbeaten career record on the line in the Future Champions Novices Hurdle. Some decent sorts have won it in the past and while all those engaged are present on merit, they all have chinks in the armor and the unbeaten son of Accordion should stay as such.

Handicaps are something of a minefield at the best of times and the one over hurdles on this occasion is no different. In an attempt to narrow it down, Back Me Up and Mythical Prince may be the two main protagonists with a hesitant vote going to the latter who handles testing going well.

The Paddy Power Chase is always an even bigger conundrum. Tony Martin won this two years ago with Newbay Prop and although that won is again engaged, the trainer’s best shout may lie with Lochan Lacha. Dooneys Gate made an eye catching re-appearance after a long lay off while Parsons Pistol and Hoopey both have their chance. Any market move for Martin’s could speak volumes!

Willie Mullins should add to his Bumper hall with Some Target while his Quadrillon should continue winning ways in Limerick and Noel Meade’s Lean Times may belatedly get off the mark in Down Royal.

For today though, The Guvnor changes his traditional advice and says 'Try these Willie Mullins four’:

Secant Star (12:25 Leopardstown)
Quadrillon (1:05 Limerick)
Fionnegas (1:55 Leopardstown)
Some Target (3:40 Leopardstown)
