Thurles preview for 20th December
Subject to morning inspection due to forecasted fog

It will be very much a case of the calm before the storm as Thurles stages the final fixture before the Christmas Festivals at Leopardstown, Limerick and Down Royal take off. Here, The Guvnor will strive to leave readers with some funds in the kitty for when they do.

The opener at 12:25 looks to be something of a match between Hans Crescent out of the Michael Hourigan yard and Eddie O’Grady’s Rigour Back Bob. Preference would be for the latter due to him running a more recent run than his main rival and that some of those he beat have acquitted themselves fairly well since.

That race is followed by a contest short on numbers but certainly not so on quality. Chicago Grey (Gordon Elliot), Next Week (Jimmy Mangan), Mick The Tooth (John Berry) and Mourad (Willie Mullins) all bring good credentials to the table. The latter may hold the answer however. On his latest outing, he finished three lengths behind Donnas Palm and Noel Meade’s Great Palm gelding has claimed a valuable race in Navan since that, in which Chicago Grey finished third.

Charlie Swan’s Ella Watson looks the one to beat in the 2:05 while for the second day running it is at least not intended that the Bumper will be the last contest. Regarding same, The Guvnor’s sources indicate that Cottage Star is highly regarded by Noel Meade and those in Tu Va Stables.

In the penultimate contest, Battlefront might be worth keeping an eye on. The progeny of Pistolet Bleu never runs a bad race and will again team up with Katie Walsh for her father Ted in the colours of her mother Helen.

However, to sum up, The Guvnor will say ‘Try These Three’:
Rigour Back Bob (12:35)
Mourad (1:05)
Cottage Star (2:35)
