The Guvnor's Downpatrick preview – December 18th
Subject to 8am inspection.

The last weekend of racing before the mad Christmas rush kicks off tomorrow with a seven race card at Downpatrick, the first of which gets under way at 12:30 and the Guvnor has a few suggestions about how to make the bookies subsidise your seasonal festivities…

Trainers based close to the track must always be highly respected and Ian Ferguson (Posh Bird), James Lambe (Galliana), Mervyn Torrens (Son Of Mary) and Blaney Hamilton (Honest Man) are all represented in the opening contest. The latter of the quartet was mentioned over two miles at Down Royal in May, so the drop in trip to the minimum shouldn’t present a problem. However, with the going likely to be a lot worse than it was back then, Oliver Brady’s Danikhali. The Bahare gelding, has been in good form both on the level and over timber and the celebrations should be memorable to say the least if the mercurial Monaghan man’s charge should score.

Race two on the card sees trainers Eddie O’Grady (Goban Saor) and Michael Hourigan (Awkward Moment) and Eamonn Sheehy (Kusadasi) send stable residents – each with sprinklings of form – an awful long way from their respective bases for a Maiden Hurdle. The first of the triumvirate mentioned may be the answer with the stable in cracking form at present.

On occasion, some things are too obvious to be ignored. Hence, Peter John Carberry claiming a useful 4lbs off Takendo for his uncle Arthur Moore in the 1.40 is noted. Willie Mullins sending one horse up north from Carlow is another such instance. The steed in question, Cru, hasn’t exactly set the world alight to date but the mere fact that he has been seen up there alone for the 2:10 race says a lot.

And so, we arrive at the trap that is the Bumper! Dapper Dan and Buckshots Banjo have both run up against decent sorts to date and would have their claims, Nina Carberry, as ever, cannot be ignored and any support for Liam Lennon’s Tammys Hill must be heeded, but the one whose form jumps off the page is the O’Grady mare, Lou’s Coole Girl. Third to no less than Dunguib on her debut over timber and filling the same berth behind the impressive looking Killultagh Queen at Fairyhouse when back in Bumper company at Fairyhouse last time out, she should have enough in her locker to account for the opposition here.

In conclusion, The Guvnor says ‘Try These Three’:
Goban Saor (1:05)
Cru (2:10)
Lou’s Coole Girl (3:20)
