Nina strikes late to deny The Guvnor a debut winner!
The Guvnor has learned the hard way over the years that it’s not a good idea for him to go against Ms Nina Carberry… and so it proved for this pundit’s maiden outing at Cork today.

In his preview of the Cork meet, the Guvnor wrote: ‘Now, in ways, the Bumper can be the most difficult contest on a card to predict. Against that, a simple policy would be to stick with the Willie/Patrick Mullins combination as at times it seems they are nigh on unbeatable.

Their representative in this heat, Perfectly Composed, will have been off the track for 350 days by the time the race comes around. The last outing was on New Year’s Eve 2008 when finishing a neck behind none other than Asigh Pearl. As was previously mentioned, the Tu Va offspring has certainly bolstered the form since and while Lonesome Dove was well fancied when being a late withdrawal at Punchestown recently and Lou’s Coole Girl would also have claims, it may be best to stick to the tried and trusted combination.’

The Willie and Patrick Mullins combination seemed certain to come home first until the gallant Ms Carberry conjured up one mighty effort from the Milan filly, Lonesome Dove, and edged a thrilling finish by a short head from Special Token with the Mullins family half a length further behind in third place.

Elsewhere, Eddie O’Grady’s Diophas had things all his own way in the opening Maiden Hurdle. Once Willie Mullins didn’t declare I’m Still Standing and the Jessie Harrington experiment with Jumbajukiba didn’t work out , Andrew McNamara had little trouble in continuing his boss’s rich vein of form as the John P. McManus owned gelding romped home by seven lengths.

Mullins had better luck in the Mares Maiden Hurdle as Morning Supreme did indeed skate home albeit at very prohibitive odds (3/10f) while our third hopeful selection of the day, Instinctive, had no luck at all when losing out in a barging match with eventual winner Knockieran (14/1). The aforementioned Dessie Hughes charge could only finish a well beaten 5th.

FÓGRA: It has come to The Guvnor’s attention that two of his three Nap selections were not, in fact, declared to run at all! Therefore, future selections will not be published until after final declarations have been released. Check on Thursday evening for Friday’s Downpatrick picks!
