The Charity Championship Challenge threw up a few surprises on its final outing of the season and Tony Leen’s seemingly unassailable lead disappeared in a flash as Jonathan Mullin blew the competition out of the water on the final day.
The Sports Editor from the Irish Examiner has lead the competition from day one and with one week to go it looked like the Kerryman would claim the title of top pundit. But RTE TV’s GAA Correspondent Jonathan Mullin had other ideas and has powered home with two strong performances in the last few weeks.
After three weeks the Leen Machine sat atop the leaderboard with €270 in winnings. Mullin was back in joint second spot with myself on €90 - a long way off the pace. The following week the ante was upped to bridge the gap on the leaders and our pundits had €100 to play with. Tony Leen failed to increase his winnings that week but Mullin closed the gap to €60 backing Tyrone in various different markets.
It was Mullin’s continued faith in Mickey Harte’s men that saw him over the finish line. He backed Tyrone to win at 7/4 in the match betting and also plumed for Tommy McGuigan to score a goal at anytime during the final.
Tony added a ton to his tally with Tyrone scoring the first point of the game from a placed ball at 4/1 but it was not enough to keep him in the top spot as Mullin pulled in €285 on the All Ireland final to claim top spot.
Further down the ranks I managed to salvage some respect by leapfrogging Alan Milton and securing a place among the medals. I backed Tyrone at 6/4 to lift the trophy and had Kerry to lead at half-time and Tyrone to win at full time at 15/2.
Milton boosted his Championship tally with Tyrone +3 at 8/13 but he slipped down to fourth nonetheless. Poor old Liam was rooted to the bottom of the table from day one and receives the Charity Championship Challenge Wooden Spoon.
Jonathan Mullin’s chosen charity Hope House in Foxford will receive a cheque for €495 from Boylesports.
