Rounders All Star Awards Upgraded
When Uachtaran Cumann Luthchleas Gael, Nicky Brennan, addressed Rounders Congress in February last he promised to do something worthwhile for the game and he was true to his word.
Last Saturday night, the annual GAA Rounders All Star Awards were part of a great occasion in Pairc an Chrocaigh, which welcomed the fifteen top hurlers from the Nicky Rackard Cup Competition, fifteen hurlers from the Christy Ring Competition and eighteen key players from the 2007 Rounders Championships.
Amid the speeches, fanfare, video, photographics and the excellent banquet nine female and nine male Rounders athletes were honoured and were presented by Nicky Brennan with beautiful trophies on behalf of Cumann Luthchleas Gael.
Ulster players honoured included one Derry member from Cumann Naomh Mhichil, Lios Aine, namely Patrick Coey, a footballer and handballer of great ability who impressed tremendously Rounders officials who noted his perfect execution of skills and movements peculiar to his regular fielding position of Short Stop. Patrick has also in the past shown a flair for Hurling, and indication of his all round athleticism. We congratulate Patrick Coey on this his second successive Rounders All Star Award, and hope that he can repeat his achievments in 2008 and perhaps claim an ll Ireland title in the Golden Jubilee Year (2008) of the Rounders Revival.
The other Ulster players honoured were all Brefni players from the Erne Eagles Rounders club in south Cavan. Eagles claimed their first Ladies All Ireland title this past season, and their mens team won the All Ireland Mens title for the tenth successful season. The Cavan All Stars were: Damien McArdle, Jim Reilly, Sean Og Brady, Dympna Reilly, Una Brady and Niamh Brennan
One interesting fact caught the President's eye at the Awards presentation. he spotted da name sake in the list of All Stars, with a Nicky Brennan from the Carlow Club Cuchulainn listed for a presentation.
The remainder of the Stars were Colm Brennan, Kenneth Nolan, Nickie Brennan, John Nolan, Mattie Dowling, Nicola Clarke, Alex OBrien, Orla Conlon, Carmel Maloney, Paula Lenehan and Rebecca McCormick.
